Get Your CFI Back in a Weekend.
CFI-G Initial & Add-On · Commercial Glider Add-On · Motorglider Training
Add a CFI-G and reinstate every expired CFI certificate you’ve ever held — in one efficient program. Designed for airline pilots, career aviators, and anyone who let their CFI lapse. Stuart will travel for motorglider-specific training.
The FAA Pathway That Reinstates Your Entire CFI
(It’s not a loophole — it’s exactly what the regulations were designed to allow. But most pilots don’t know about it.)
The Regulation: FAR 61.199(a)
A person whose flight instructor certificate has expired may apply for reinstatement of flight instructor privileges by passing a practical test for one of the ratings listed on the expired flight instructor certificate, or by passing a practical test for an additional flight instructor rating.
Translation: To reinstate your expired CFI — with ALL its original ratings — you only need to pass a practical test for a new rating. You do NOT need to retest for the ratings that expired.
The Strategy: Add CFI-G, Reinstate Everything
| Step | Action | Typical Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ground study for Commercial Glider + CFI-G knowledge test | 1–3 days self-study |
| 2 | Commercial Glider knowledge test | 1 appointment |
| 3 | Solo glider flights (20 required) | 1–3 flying days |
| 4 | CFI-G knowledge test (25 questions — one of the shortest FAA exams) | 1 appointment |
| 5 | Commercial Glider checkride | Half day |
| 6 | CFI-G checkride (same DPE, same day if available) | Half day |
The Aircraft: Grob 109B
Motorglider
The Grob 109B is a German-engineered self-launching motorglider — one of the most practical glider training aircraft in the world.
Key Specifications
- Type: Self-Launching Motor Glider / two-seat
- Glide Ratio: ~38:1 — exceptional cross-country gliding capability
- Configuration: Side-by-side seating, dual controls
- Self-Launching: No tow plane required — climbs to altitude under its own power, shuts down engine, and soars
The Aircraft: Grob 109B Motorglider

Why a Motorglider Beats a Pure Glider
- No tow fees — engine launch costs far less than an aerotow
- Schedule any time — no tow pilot availability to coordinate
- Fly in marginal thermal conditions — restart the engine and fly home if needed
- More student-focused — no rushed tow sequence; full attention on learning from the start
Will Travel for Motorglider Training
Stuart is available for on-site motorglider instruction at your location. Ideal for pilots who own a motorglider, fly at a club with a motorglider fleet, or prefer training at their home airport.
Travel Instruction Rates
Motorglider travel instruction is billed at a daily rate rather than hourly — covering Stuart’s time, travel, and preparation for multi-day programs. Contact Stuart directly to discuss your situation and get a custom quote.
This makes concentrated weekend or multi-day programs highly cost-effective for pilots who want to earn their Commercial Glider or CFI-G efficiently at their home field.
